Beginning September 2025, new English language standards will apply to the Skills in Demand Visa (Subclass 482).

If you are planning to apply for the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482), there are important updates you should know about the English language requirements. The Australian Government has announced changes that will take effect from 13 September 2025 (subject to the passing of legislation). These changes are designed to make testing more consistent, flexible, and fair for applicants.

Why Are the Changes Happening?

The goal of the new rules is to:

  • Ensure consistent scoring across all English test providers.

  • Give applicants more options when choosing which test to take.

  • Align requirements with the vocational level of English proficiency as set out in Australian migration law.

What’s New from September 2025?

From 13 September 2025, the following updates will apply:

  • Three more English tests will be added to the list of acceptable exams.

  • Some existing tests and score requirements will change.

  • If a test allows a single skill retake (for example, only re-sitting one section like speaking or writing), those results may be accepted if the department recognises the test.

  • The Cambridge C1 Advanced test will no longer be accepted if taken on or after 13 September 2025. If you are planning to use this test, make sure to complete it before this date.

Tests Taken Before 13 September 2025

If you complete your English test before 13 September 2025, don’t worry. These results will:

  • Keep valid for three years from the date of the examination.

  • Be accepted under the current rules as long as they meet the required scores.

Labour Agreement Stream

For applicants under the labour agreement stream, English requirements may be different. The level of English needed will depend on the specific agreement between your employer and the Australian Government. It is important to check the details of your agreement to understand what applies to you.

Who Is Exempt?

There are no changes to exemptions. If you currently qualify for an exemption from English testing for the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482), this will remain the same after the new rules begin.

What Should Applicants Do Now?

  • Check your test options: Make sure the test you choose will still be valid after September 2025.

  • Plan your test date: If you are considering the Cambridge C1 Advanced, take it before 13 September 2025.

  • Understand the new rules: From September, requirements will be linked to the vocational level of English in Australian migration law.

  • Keep documents ready: Ensure you have valid test results when you apply.

Next Steps for Applicants

The forthcoming modifications to the English language criteria for the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) are intended to give applicants additional flexibility and clarity in the application process. With more test options and fairer scoring, it will be easier for skilled workers to show their English ability. However, planning ahead is very important—especially if you are taking the Cambridge test.
